preDevCamp San Francisco was a great success!

First I want to thank everyone who came this weekend to preDevCamp, without you it would not have been the success that it was. Our final count of attendees was around 140 people throughout the day. For the keynote by Jesse Donaldson and the in person welcome by Mitch Allen there was a standing room only crowd at Palm’s headquarters in Sunnyvale.

Thank you also goes out to Aaron Hyde, Pam Deziel, and the rest of the people from Palm that came out and made this event such a success by allowing us to use the Palm cafeteria and multipurpose room for out event. We had representatives from all of our sponsors on hand with the largest array of prizes and swag I have ever given out at an event!

Congratulations to Seni Sangrujee for winning the zanox web services contest with his event finding application that also showed adds from zanox based on what type of event you searched for, well done!

We had demos of about 12 applications that were either developed that day or were worked on with help from the large number of Palm engineers that kindly came into work on their Saturday to help people hack and work with the Palm webOS SDK. Some of the highlights were Word Ace from Self Aware Games, who also gave an awesome presentation on CSS3, Twee from Delicious Morsel and Scientific RPN Calculator by Marco van Hylckama Vlieg.

Andrew Peters from UE Architects, gave a great presentation on UI development and design for webOS and showed how Adobe Fireworks CS4 is the perfect tool for building webOS UI mockups and graphics.

Lunch was provided by Pivotal Labs, Sonic.net and UE Architects in the form of 40 Pizzas from RoundTable. They were consumed with great gusto!

Projects for Non-Developers

Thank you to the folks at the Baltimore preDevCamp for posting this great list for preDevCamp

Non-developers are more than welcome to attend! We need people to:

  • Make an Omnigraffle or Visio stencil  [ Adobe Fireworks works great for this too!]
  • Test other people’s application
  • Help with planning and wire framing
  • Come up with app idea
  • Help developers with CSS
  • Learn HTML, JavaScript, and CSS — our event will be a library!
  • Help your local organizer keep their sanity [ This is a BIG one! ]

And I bet you can think of other stuff you could help with too. Stop by your local preDevCamp tomorrow and help out!

Sonic.net Helps out on sponsoring lunch at SF preDevCamp

I received a call from Peter at Sonic.net this morning, he loves his Palm pre and wants to help out with preDevCamp. So, I asked him to help buy us lunch with Altus Learning Systems, Pivotal Labs and UE Architects. Since our event is growing so much its been fantastic as we have had more people sign up more sponsors have come forward. Check out Sonic.net and thank them for their support of preDevCamp!

Sprint sponsors preDevCamp San Francisco Bay Area !

Thank you to Derek Gathright, who is organizing the KC Palm Pre Developer Camp, for putting Sprint in touch with me.
Sprint has an upcoming Developer Conference in Santa Clara that I think you will want to attend.
Here is the Details:
- Oct 26-28 in Santa Clara
- Palm is a top level sponsor and will be a keynote speaker
- Palm SMEs will be there covering a lot of best practices
- Palm will be making some very strategic announcements at this event
- $250 registration before Sep 15, $350 after that
So its a pretty cheap conference to attend, plus its in our own backyard, plus there is going to be a ton of mobile development happening at it for a ton of phones that are on Sprint’s Network.
So here is the big deal! Sprint has given our preDevCamp 2 passes to this awesome event to give away for free! So 2 lucky attendees will get to go on Sprints dime to this cool event.
Thank you Sprint and for all your help with the KC preDevCamp as well.

Calling all Carpools! people need a lift to preDevCamp!

Hello everyone,

While I tried very hard to get us a location in San Francisco proper, when Palm offered their space, well I couldn’t refuse!

So what I am asking the folks in San Francisco to do is if you have room, see if you can help the others with car pooling down to Palm. Use the comments or twitter to see if you can fix up rides.

I also recommend using 511.org as it is not that far of a walk from the Caltrain station (1.6 miles), also you could consider catching Caltrain and just taking a cab to Palm.

Use the comments section to organize.

Luke

We have a location and its the best one on the planet!

We are going to be holding our DevCamp at Palm HQ in Sunnyvale!

Thank you so much to the great folks at Palm for making this happen. Thank you also to the huge number of people that stepped up and offered suggestions, begged managers, and offered their help, preDevCamp could not have happened without you. So, what do you need to do now?

To join us you need to register for preDevCamp at http://sanfrancisco.predevcamp.org/registration/ and then join us at 11am on August 8th at 950 W. Maude Ave. Sunnyvale, CA 94085 come in the front door, pick up your badge with security and join us.

I also want to thank all of our sponsors, they can be seen on our sponsors page. Make sure you check them out and thank them for taking care of our basic needs. Food, clothing and Palm pre Cellphones.

Thank you goes to all the people at Palm who worked hard to come through with this great space to hold this event.

See you on Saturday,

Luke Kilpatrick

I’m going to preDevCamp and I am bringing…

So you’re all pumped up to come to preDevCamp but you don’t know what to bring, here is a list that can help you have a great time at camp.

1.  A Laptop running one of the 3 supported operating systems in at least a virtual machine if not as the main OS (32 bit windows -xp or vista, Mac OSX, Linux)

2.  A thumb drive or a cd with the SDK to share with your neighbor if they forget it. Get it at http://developer.palm.com

3.  Your coolest geek shirt. Don’t have one? you still have time to order one from think geek

4. An Idea of what you want to build or help build.

5. Your palm pre – you have one right? if not you will have several chances to win one. Ideally in developer mode.

6. Graphic Design software if you’re a designer – Adobe Fireworks works best. Get the trial here.

7. An IDE – Eclipse works best and palm has special plugins for it.  http://developer.palm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1639

8. Paper or a notebook for sketching ideas and notes. – Portable whiteboards are cool too.

9. Hacker / devhouse  / excitement to learn / can do spirit  – without this you will have no fun, and at the end of the day I hope that is what you have.

10.  Have a great camp!

Please add more ideas in the comments!
